My Walk

by Joanne Grumet

This morning I walk downhill on a gravel path
alongside the smooth tarmac of a road

through the rubber soles of my sneakers, my toes
grapple for traction against the uneven stones

and I realize these bits of rock are ancestors

We may not share DNA but they are the minerals
in my blood and bones

A family reunion before a final reunion
